The Banshees of Inisherin – When Silence Hurts More Than Words

A special gem about friendship ending, and the damage left behind when people stop talking.

Release Year: 2022 / Directed by: Martin McDonagh / Main Cast: Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan, Kerry Condon

The Banshees of Inisherin is a small, deeply human story set on a remote Irish island. At first, nothing dramatic seems to be happening. Two longtime friends, Pádraic and Colm, simply stop speaking. But that simple break becomes the center of a painful, unsettling film.

Pádraic, played with warmth and confusion by Colin Farrell, can’t understand why Colm suddenly wants nothing to do with him. Colm, portrayed by Brendan Gleeson, believes he has wasted his life on small talk and wants to focus on something that will last. His decision is calm, but its impact is cruel.

The film moves slowly, letting silence do the work. Conversations are awkward. Days stretch. Loneliness settles in. Around them, the island feels cut off from the world, echoing the emotional isolation growing between the characters. Supporting characters add texture — some kind, some sharp, all shaped by the same quiet environment.

What makes the film powerful is how ordinary the conflict feels. There’s no clear villain. Just people hurting each other without fully meaning to. The humor is dry and uncomfortable, often arriving at the worst moments.

The Banshees of Inisherin stays with you because it understands something painful: not all endings come with closure. Sometimes, people leave — and the silence that follows can be louder than any argument.
